Free magazine ‘Oh Boy’ is about to celebrate the 4th anniversary of its foundation. But ironically, its also well known as an unpurchasable magazine among K-pop fans. Top stars of Korea volunteered to be the cover model of this magazine which the photographer Kim Hyun-sung plan, shoot, distribute himself. We took an interview with this quiet photographer who captured memorable pictures and worked on great albums of stars that people were crazy for.

They are working with stars whom everybody wants to work with. What would be the reason?
Its not that ‘Oh boy’ is especially outstanding but that it’s different with others. I think that as they called themselves magazine of fashion and culture and keep talking about animals and environment stuffs gave a fresh jolt to the readers. While other licenced fashion magazines are in positioning strategy with others, ‘Oh boy’ isn’t compiled with others. Also in my point of view, I’m certain that this magazine is an extremely unique media for us. I think that’s why stars feel fresh about ‘Oh boy’ and want to take pictures then be put on.

Is there any stars that you want to take pictures but not accomplished yet?
It’s Su-ji. Actually we heard that she want to take photographs with us. Of course, we would be glad to, but in the process of talking to each other were delayed. Some other day we should make it. It’s a mercy they are willing to work with us, except for that, I’m not sure.

How could ‘Oh boy’ survive in the field of pictorial of stars as it is said as a transitory field?
I think that its because we did not make any concepts nor drafts to shoot pictures but took their natural figure as they are. We’ve never put any hair makeup heavily to them. Usually in making pictorials of stars, there are many concepts and accordingly put heavy makeups and stylings but as we haven’t done like that, fans rather like us.

Not only photographs but the stories that ‘Oh boy’ is talking about is also different to other fashion magazines.
We don’t like stuffs to be consumed, exhauted or to follow the trend. We are saying that it’s a pity that there are unused cloths on the closet.
It's true that the entertainment industry is encouraging consumption. It’s more than true. So we are trying to tell the readers regardless of that fact, and ‘Oh boy’ is totally this kind of magazine. We are always thinking that we are doing works that how beautiful a short sleeve used T-shirt could be. I sometimes bring my or my wife’s used cloths to use them on styling. I even put it to Tae-min of SHINee. Those cloths are valuable enough that we can’t get them even if we have such money.

You have done many album artworks of idol groups. From Dong Bang Shin Ki, Girls Generation to SHINee. What’s different between participating in album artworks and pictorials?
It’s totally different. The key role of album artwork is not the photographer but the art director. Picture is only a part of the whole artwork. From deciding what kind of materials will be used for the album cover to what kind of font should be used is decided in relation to the whole concept. Picture is also one of the detailed point.

What idol groups have you worked with on making artwork until now?
SHINee, Girls Generation and Dong Bang Shin Ki recently participated in album works. The main point of ‘Catch Me’, album of Dong Bang Shin Ki, was to express
