K-Pop and Design, meet in Gwangju

Date October. 04. 2013   Comment 0 Comment

When 20 year old girl ‘Shantia’, who visited SM Town concert in Paris, was aksed a question that where she wants to visit in Korea, her answer was ‘Jeolla-Do’. The reason that this foreign girl’s answer was not Seoul, nor Busan but an unexpected place was simple. It’s because Jeolla-Do is U-Know Yunho’s hometown.

On 29th of August this year, a meeting was held for cooperation and convergence of fashion and entertainment industry, sponsored by National Assembly’s Association for Research on Korean wave. In the meeting, professor of Dongduk Women’s University ‘Choi Hyun Sook’ mentioned the case about this year’s Gwangju Design Biennale, which attracted huge attention from fans all over the world by collaboration of K-pop star U-Know Yunho and Designer Lee Woo Jin. And she suggested that this success story should be also applied in fashion exhibition.

To ordinary people, even it’s just a middle school building which is not their objecct of concern, it becomes special if it’s a place that their lovers spent their growing period. To U-Know Yunho’s fans, Gwangju becomes a start of the story that a boy overcomes many hardships and wounds and grows as a star with overwhelming existence. In other words, the work which was the grand finale of 2013 Gwangju Design Biennale showed the ‘story’ into modern art.

As usual art gallerys, there is a souvenir shop next to the last 5th exhibition room.

The teacup that U-Know Yunho participated in designing and decided to donate all the earnings, was made by Haengnam Chinaware.

One day before the opening, CEO of Haengnam Chinaware showed his enthusiasm by visiting the gallery himself and the products were sold like hot cakes. On the second day, all the products were sold out and recorded sales of about one hundred million.

It’s surprising, but it’s also certain that this is not all. Design and K-pop star which makes life beautiful, and the synergy that the region can make together may be something more than we can imagine.
